Digital Storytelling in the Classroom Reading

Reading the text about digital storytelling is a lot to take in.  Coming into this class I had never heard of digital storytelling, so I had zero background knowledge.  Reading the text about digital storytelling is very overwhelming, but a nice source of information.  There's a lot to consider when it comes to digital storytelling and especially if you are going to use in the classroom.  Digital storytelling is a great opportunity for students to experience something they more then likely wouldn't get during their school career.  It also can be a great outlet for students to really expression themselves where otherwise with just written word they would never be able to. With that presenting digital storytelling to a class is not a cut and dry process.  Teachers need to be ready to defend what they maybe doing in class to administrators, other teachers, parents, and even students.  They need to have a clear and to the point plan with a clear and to the point rubric.  Teachers also need to make sure that students are following the same process of writing a story if they were to be writing a  story with just a pen and paper.  There is a lot that goes a long with digital storytelling.  However, if used correctly and planned out digital storytelling can be a wonderful, fun, new source for students to use!

  1. I liked your post - especially pointing out while it's fun & exciting - there are lots of things to consider. Coming up with a plan & making sure you can defend why digital storytelling is necessary in the classroom is something that will def. be needed. Causing a ruckus with administration parents seems very scary which is what probably turns off a lot of teachers. I think if every teacher goes into incorporating DST in small steps into their classroom with a good intention & knows how they have explain why it's beneficial - that's a great start!!

  2. Laura, I also felt overwhelmed when I started reading about digital storytelling because there was so much to consider. I think what makes projects like the video we were working so valuable is that it gets us reflecting on the value of digital storytelling so we can explain to parents, administrators and other teachers what it is, why it's important and how it benefits the students. Digital storytelling can be an excellent strategy in the classroom and the more you do it and reflect on it, the better you'll get at adapting it for your classroom.
