Digital Storytelling

My overall impressions of what I saw:
I thought what I saw was very interesting. It definitely is a new way to tell a story. I really enjoyed how it incorporates so many different types of media too, in order to tell the story. I think with technology being such a huge part in students lives this way of telling a story will definitely get students excited about stories and story telling again!

How could digital storytelling be used in education:
Digital storytelling could be used as a new way to present projects in a classroom. Instead of creating a power point to present, students can create a digital story to present projects. I believe it would be much more appealing for others to watch then a power point. Student's could also create a book report using digital storytelling. Again, I believe students will be more engaged with the project. Students will also be more engaged in the presentation of the project!

How would I assess what I saw:
I watched the story titled "Untitled". I thought the story was a very moving story, and I was able to get that feeling because of how the speaker was talking within the story, as well as the pictures that were being displayed. I enjoyed this concept because if I was just reading the story in a book I may not have been able to pick up on the storytellers emotion right away. The piece was very well put together and included all of the aspects that a digital story should include!

  1. Laura, The digital stories are definitely a more interesting, exciting option for the presenter and the viewer in the classroom. As a math teacher, I have been having some difficultly deciding how to use digital storytelling in my classroom, and your post helped spark some potential ideas. I am thinking that they could be utilized within a math course with some of the "real-life" problems that my textbook presents and the student responses they encourage sharing. My only concern is the time that will be needed to prepare a student presentation in my class, and if it will truly be worth it in the end.

  2. I totally agree with you regarding how engaging DST can be. It is a different way of presenting content, and may include all sort of elements that students are commonly interested in (video, animation, music); therefore, they will be more interested in creating their stories and watching other's creations. the only drawback, as Aaron mentioned, it is the time will take to have students learn how to and create their own stories.

  3. Using DST in the classroom to tell stories will keep the children's interest and perhaps increase a desire for reading. PowerPoint had a good run, but it is time to put PowerPoint on the shelf and become open minded with DST. A new way to tell stories and involve the student. I agree with "The students will be more engaged",DST will engage the student's creativeness that will no doubt be a new way of learning.

  4. I also think that there are lots of alternatives to power point presentations for students. Students need to learn ways to liven up whatever they are trying to share - and wake up the others in the class who are bored of the same old PP. I always think about how much extra time it would take to teach students how to use technology - but most of the time they either already know how to do it or someone else in the class can help them. It's worth seeing the kids a lot more excited and PROUD when they make something fun & meaningful.
